COLFAX — In Girl Scouts, adult members serve as the role models girls will always remember. They are the ones who give of their time, skills and responsibilities to help girls grow into confident young women, who make their communities a better place. Every spring, Girl Scouts Carolinas Peaks to Piedmont (GSCP2P) honors their exceptional adult members during the organization’s Annual Meeting. This year, due to the current COVID-19 pandemic, GSCP2P held a Virtual Town Hall Meeting in lieu of the in-person event and adults were recognized during the program.
Valerie King of Yadkinville received the Honor Award. The Honor Award recognizes a registered Girl Scout adult who has delivered outstanding service and contributes to the achievement of the council’s goals in two or more geographic areas. King is a current Troop Experience Manager for GSCP2P, serving five counties and specializing in Destinations and Global experiences.
King’s Girl Scout journey began as the troop leader of her daughter’s troop and four years ago moved into full-time employment. Her love for Girl Scouting shines through in all she does. She is heavily involved with cross-regional and council events, including Adult Learning retreats for volunteers, the Girl Scouts Love State Parks initiative and annual Girls of Faith event. A signature program that she has developed for the council is the Civics Engagement Program, which includes three steps of learning including a badge blitz on civics, overnight opportunity in Raleigh, NC to meet with lawmakers and a multi-day trip to Washington, DC.
“Our adult volunteers and council staff are who help make the Girl Scout Leadership Experience happen,” said GSCP2P CEO Lane Cook. “They do so much for today’s girls from leading troop meetings to introducing girls to new experiences and building them up to become leaders in our society. Our mission is possible because of them.”
